How to arrive

The best way to reach these towns is by car. Reaching Bormio and Livigno by car offers flexibility and scenic views of the Italian Alps. From Milan, take the A4 motorway towards Brescia, then follow the signs to Tirano. From there, continue on the SS38 road, which will lead you directly to Bormio. The journey is approximately three hours, offering picturesque landscapes and quaint Italian villages along the way.

To reach Livigno, continue from Bormio along the SS301 road, passing through the beautiful Stelvio National Park. This route not only provides breathtaking alpine views but also allows you to experience the region’s natural beauty up close. Pay attention to not take the road called “Passo dello Stelvio”: this narrow road is open only in summer, but it is quite full of tourists, motorbikes, bikes, camper and really narrow. So take the road SS301 I suggest above.

Historical facts about Bormio and Livigno

Bormio and Livigno are not only known for their natural beauty and outdoor activities but also boast rich historical backgrounds. Bormio has been a popular destination since Roman times, renowned for its thermal baths. The town’s strategic location along the ancient Via Imperii trade route made it an important center for commerce and culture. Medieval structures like the Tower of Hours (Torre delle Ore) and the Church of San Vitale reflect its storied past.

Livigno, often referred to as “Little Tibet” due to its high altitude and unique climate, has a history rooted in its isolation. Until the 20th century, it was accessible only during the summer months due to heavy snowfall. This isolation preserved Livigno’s distinct customs and traditions, which are still celebrated today. The region’s duty-free status, granted in the early 1800s, was initially a measure to boost the local economy, and it continues to attract visitors for shopping and trade. These historical elements add a layer of depth to the experience of visiting Bormio and Livigno, making them destinations rich in both natural and cultural heritage.
