Introduction
Let’s make a first important distinction: a) long trip around Japan to visit many cities and regions or b) short trip visiting two – maximum three cities. In October 2023 I chose the second option by visiting two cities: Osaka and Kyoto. So here I will write most about this second option. My suggestion for this kind of trip is to move from the airport to the two cities by train, and then move on foot or by metro within these cities. Since Kyoto and Osaka are very close, I suggest taking normal trains, not high-speed trains (Shinkansen).
Here below we will find a first section with several paragraphs about TRAIN system to move between different cities. I will also give you some tips about smart cards and discounts. Then I prepare another section with information about METRO and how to move within the cities.
Now we are ready to discover the best way to travel around Japan: how to use Japanese Transport System like a PRO. Let’s go deeper and analyze all the features.
From Kansai Airport to Kyoto: Hopping on the Haruka Express
If you are going to visit Kansai Region, as I did, choose to landing at Kansai International Airport (KIX). Welcome to Kansai! Upon landing, follow the signs to the JR (Japan Railways) Haruka Express. Then purchase a Haruka Express Ticket at the JR Ticket Office or the self-service machines. Secure your Haruka Express ticket to Kyoto. Pro tip: Consider the ICOCA & HARUKA package for added convenience. I will write more about this in the specific paragraph below. So, you are ready to boar the Haruka Express!
The Haruka Express is a sleek, comfortable train departing from Kansai Airport. Find your platform, board the train, and settle into your seat. The journey to Kyoto is a scenic ride through Osaka and surrounding landscapes. You will arrive into Kyoto Station after approximately 75 minutes. Enjoy the seamless transition from the airport to the cultural heart of Kyoto.
From Kyoto to Osaka: onwards by Local Train
Once in Kyoto, after your lovely stay there, you will be ready to leave towards Osaka. Navigate to the central hub of Kyoto Station and follow the signs and consult the station maps for guidance. The head to the ticket counters or the machines to purchase a ticket for the local train to Osaka. If you still have your ICOCA card, you can use it for this journey as well. Kyoto Station is well-connected, offering multiple train options to Osaka. Depending on your final destination in Osaka, choose the appropriate train line (e.g., JR Kyoto Line, JR Osaka Loop Line).
So, board the local train bound for Osaka. These trains are frequent, and the journey to Osaka typically takes around 15-30 minutes, depending on your chosen line and destination. Your Osaka adventure begins as you arrive at your chosen station. Whether it’s bustling Osaka Station, vibrant Namba, or any other iconic stop, you’re now ready to explore the dynamic city of Osaka.
From Osaka to Kansai Airport: Haruka Express
It’s already time to leave this city! Osaka Station is one of the biggest I have ever seen. Actually, it stands as a bustling hub of activity, seamlessly blending modernity with traditional Japanese charm. Serving as a gateway to the vibrant city of Osaka and beyond! This architectural marvel impresses visitors with its expansive layout and efficient transportation connections. Navigating its maze-like corridors reveals a world of culinary delights, shopping opportunities, and cultural experiences. From the iconic Grand Front Osaka shopping complex to the awe-inspiring views from the Umeda Sky Building, Osaka Train Station offers travelers a tantalizing taste of Japan’s dynamic urban landscape. Don’t miss Pokemon store and Nintendo Store at the 13th floor!
Follow the instructions to arrive to Haruka Express Train, buy the ticket to Kansai Airport and you will arrive at the same point you took Haruka at your arrival in Japan!
Japan Rail Pass
Let’s continue to discover the best way to travel around Japan: how to use Japanese Transport System like a PRO! The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) stands as a traveler’s ticket to seamless exploration across the Land of the Rising Sun. So, for those people choosing to travel around Japan and visit more cities, I suggest to buy the JR pass. Purchasing this pass is a straightforward process, typically done before arrival in Japan through authorized agents or online platforms. Once in possession of the JR Pass exchange order, travelers can redeem it for the actual pass at designated JR offices upon arrival in Japan, presenting their passport and exchange order. With the pass in hand, holders gain unlimited access to the extensive JR network, including Shinkansen (bullet trains), limited express trains, and local JR lines, offering unparalleled flexibility and convenience for exploring Japan’s diverse attractions.
Using the JR Pass is equally simple. Holders can board JR trains by presenting their pass to station staff or ticket inspectors, bypassing the need to purchase individual tickets for each journey. Additionally, the pass covers select JR buses and ferry services, further enhancing its value and versatility for travelers.
So, for optimal use of the JR Pass, it’s essential to familiarize oneself with JR’s network map and timetable, as well as any applicable restrictions or reservation requirements for certain trains. While seat reservations are not mandatory for most JR trains, they are recommended during peak travel seasons or for long-distance journeys to ensure seating availability.
Tips for Seamless Travel
Here some usefull tips and tools about traveling in Japan!
Smart Cards: Consider using smart cards like ICOCA for smooth entry and exit at stations, eliminating the need for individual tickets. I suggest to buy ICOCA on the web before arrive in Japan (you will receive the card). It’s rechargeable and very useful for many things (transports, vending machines etc.).
The ICOCA card is an essential travel companion for exploring Japan’s vibrant cities and scenic countryside with unparalleled convenience. Easily obtainable at major transportation hubs like airports and train stations, acquiring an ICOCA card is a hassle-free process requiring only a small initial deposit, typically around 2000 yen, which includes a 500 yen refundable deposit and 1500 yen of usable credit. Once in possession of this rechargeable smart card, travelers can effortlessly navigate Japan’s extensive public transportation network, including trains, buses, subways, and even some taxis, by simply tapping the card on designated readers upon entry and exit.
Actually, the versatility of the ICOCA card extends beyond its ease of use. It also offers significant time and cost savings for frequent travelers. Furthermore, users can enjoy discounted fares on certain routes, making the ICOCA card a budget-friendly option for exploring Japan’s diverse attractions.
Additionally, the convenience of the ICOCA card extends beyond transportation, as it can also be used to make purchases at a wide range of vending machines, convenience stores, and select retailers throughout Japan.
Maps and Apps: Utilize station maps and navigation apps to plan your routes and explore each city efficiently. Google Maps works very well and it suggests in details the routes and which platform / wagon take.
Osaka and Kyoto Metro system
Japan’s transport system, with its punctuality and convenience, turns every journey into an experience.
Actually, in the vibrant cities of Osaka and Kyoto, the metro system is a lifeline, seamlessly connecting historic landmarks, modern districts, and everything in between. To unlock the full potential of this transport web, grab an ICOCA card. This rechargeable smart card is not just your ticket; it’s a magic wand for hassle-free commuting.
Osaka’s Urban Ballet of Lines
Osaka’s metro network, known for its efficiency, covers the city like a finely woven tapestry. The Midosuji Line, Yotsubashi Line, and Sakaisuji Line are main arteries connecting popular districts like Namba, Umeda, and Shinsaibashi. Whether you’re delving into shopping sprees or savoring street food, the Osaka metro has you covered.
Tradition Meets Innovation in Kyoto
Kyoto’s metro system seamlessly blends ancient charm with modern convenience. The Karasuma Line and Tozai Line whisk you from the serenity of Fushimi Inari to the historic Gion district effortlessly. With the ICOCA card in hand, you can hop from the tranquility of bamboo groves to the grandeur of Kinkaku-ji without missing a beat.
So, here more tips for Smooth Metro Adventures:
