Best speakeasies in London
Another curious thing I discover during my trip in London is the “speakeasy”. Do you know it? Let me explain to you! As for the definition of a speakeasy, it refers to an establishment that illegally sold alcoholic beverages during the Prohibition era in the United States (1920-1933). Speakeasies were often hidden from view and required a secret password or special invitation for entry to avoid detection by law enforcement. Today, speakeasies have experienced a revival as themed bars that pay homage to the clandestine nature of these historic venues, offering patrons a unique and immersive drinking experience.
So, here my selection of speakeasies and few words about each place:
- Evans & Peel Detective Agency: This speakeasy is designed to resemble a detective agency from the 1920s, complete with a hidden entrance behind a bookcase. Guests must ring a doorbell and provide a password to gain entry.
- The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town: Hidden beneath a cafe, this speakeasy requires patrons to enter through a refrigerator door. Inside, guests can enjoy craft cocktails in a cozy, retro atmosphere.
- Cahoots: Located in an abandoned underground station. It transports guests back to post-war London with its themed decor and vintage cocktails served in teacups and hip flasks.
- The Blind Pig: Tucked away above a pub in Soho. It offers a sophisticated speakeasy experience with a focus on inventive cocktails and small plates.
- The Bootlegger: Inspired by the Prohibition era. It features live jazz music and an extensive menu of classic cocktails served in a clandestine setting reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy.
